Understand the ACT English format
ACT English has 75 questions in 45 minutes, covering five passages with underlined portions. You choose the best revision for each underlined portion. Questions test grammar, usage, punctuation, sentence structure, strategy, organization and style.
Master the most tested grammar rules
Subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, verb tense consistency and modifier placement appear frequently. Practice identifying the subject of each sentence and matching it with the correct verb form. Learn the most common pronoun errors: unclear antecedents and case errors.
Punctuation that ACT tests
Commas, semicolons, colons, dashes and apostrophes appear regularly. The ACT favors concise punctuation: if a comma does not serve a clear purpose, the answer without the comma is often correct. Learn the difference between restrictive and non-restrictive clauses.
Rhetorical skills: strategy, organization and style
These questions ask about the author purpose, paragraph organization and word choice. Practice identifying whether a sentence adds relevant information, transitions smoothly or maintains the correct tone. Our SAT coaching guide covers similar skills that apply to ACT.
Time management for 75 questions
You have about 36 seconds per question. Read the passage as you answer questions rather than reading the entire passage first. The questions guide you through the passage in order. Skip difficult questions and return to them if time permits.
