Understand GRE Verbal format
GRE Verbal has two sections, each with 20 questions and 30 minutes. Text completion questions have one to three blanks with multiple options for each. Sentence equivalence asks you to choose two answers that complete a sentence with similar meaning. Reading comprehension includes passages of varying length.
Build vocabulary systematically
Start vocabulary preparation early. Learn 10 to 15 new words daily, focusing on high-frequency GRE words. Use flashcards, context sentences and word roots. Do not just memorize definitions; practice using words in sentences. Our IELTS vocabulary tips also apply to GRE preparation.
Text completion strategies
Read the entire passage before looking at the answer choices. Use context clues and transition words to predict the missing word. For multi-blank questions, solve the easiest blank first. Check that all answers create a coherent passage.
Reading comprehension approach
Read the passage actively. Identify the main idea, the author tone and the structure. For long passages, read the first and last paragraphs carefully. Use the process of elimination to narrow down options. Practice with academic articles from publications that GRE sources its passages from.
