IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay Structure for Gurgaon Students

IELTS Writing Task 2 asks you to write a 250-word essay on a given topic in 40 minutes. For Gurgaon students preparing with IELTS coaching in Gurgaon, this task represents one quarter of your band score, making it crucial for achieving your target band.

Our IELTS coaching in Gurgaon helps students master all four modules. This guide focuses on the essay structure and strategies that produce Band 7 or higher responses.

Understand the Task 2 question types

IELTS Task 2 includes opinion essays, discussion essays, problem-solution essays, advantage-disadvantage essays and two-part questions. Identify the type before writing. Each type requires a slightly different structure, but all need a clear introduction, developed body paragraphs and a conclusion.

Plan your essay in 5 minutes

Spend the first five minutes analyzing the question and planning your response. Underline key words in the prompt. Decide your position. Plan two main body paragraphs, each with one clear idea supported by examples or reasons. A planned essay reads more coherently than an essay written on impulse.

Write a strong introduction

Your introduction should paraphrase the question and state your position. Do not copy the question word-for-word, which lowers your vocabulary score. A two-sentence introduction is usually enough: sentence one paraphrases the topic, sentence two states your answer or plan.

Develop body paragraphs with evidence

Each body paragraph needs a clear topic sentence, supporting evidence and a concluding thought. Use examples from your experience, general knowledge or observations. Our PTE vs IELTS guide compares essay writing across the two tests.

Avoid common mistakes

Do not write off-topic or add new ideas in the conclusion. Do not use informal language, contractions or bullet points. Do not write less than 250 words. Do not memorize entire essays; IELTS examiners are trained to identify pre-written responses.
