FAQ

AP FAQs

The mean score for the 2023 AP Exams was 2.96; over 60% of exams scored 3 or higher.

If you’ll be using a personal device or a device assigned to you by your school, bring it and the charger to the exam room. You should also bring a pen or pencil so you can take notes on the scratch paper provided by the proctor.

If you’ve earned an AP Scholar award, AP Capstone award, or AP with WE Service Recognition this year, they will be listed on your score report starting in July. You will receive award notifications by email.

Some AP classes have recommended courses you should take first—check the specific course page for that information. Your high school may also have requirements for specific AP courses. Talk to your school counsellor or a teacher to find out more.

  • If you have a documented disability that limits your ability to participate in College Board exams, you may be eligible for accommodations. Some examples of disabilities include blindness and visual impairments; learning disorders; physical and medical impairments, such as cerebral palsy and diabetes; and motor impairments. There are many others.

If you already receive accommodations at your school and have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan, you will also likely qualify.

After the AP Exams are administered, schools return all paper AP Exam materials to the AP Program. Then:

  • The multiple-choice section is scored by computer. Each answer sheet is scanned and the total number of correct responses equals the multiple-choice score.
  • The free-response section (essays and open-ended questions) and through-course performance tasks are scored at the annual AP Reading held during the first two weeks in June. Specially appointed college professors and experienced AP teachers score this section of the exam.
  • The total scores from the free-response section and the multiple-choice section are combined to form a composite score. These composite scores are then translated into the 5-point scale using statistical processes designed to ensure that, for example, a 3 this year reflects the same level of achievement as a 3 last year.

The above is true for most AP courses. However, the assessments for AP Seminar, AP Research, AP Computer Science Principles, and the three AP Art and Design courses are different.

If you haven’t taken any AP Exams since you sent your last official AP score report, then you probably don’t need to send your scores again.

You can see a history of all AP scores you’ve sent to colleges, universities, and scholarship programs by signing in to our AP student score reporting system and choosing to view Past Score Sends.

The AP Program believes that all motivated and academically prepared students should be able to enrol in AP courses. We strongly encourage all high schools to follow this principle.

Some high schools let any student enrol in an AP course as long as the student has taken the recommended prerequisite courses. Other high schools have additional rules—for example, you might have to pass a placement test to enrol in an AP course. Ask your counsellor what the process is at your school.
